Meet ASHE!

Gorgeous ASHE is a 2-year-old, neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped boy who could be your next furry family member.

ASHE had a rough start in life, but he is usually a sweet, calm, loving dog. He likes to nibble his people's clothes/hands (likely looking for love) and has been quiet/non-reactive in a temporary home.

He is crate-trained, and sleeps through the night. He walks to back door to signal needing to go out. He rides well in vehicles.

Volunteers are currently working with ASHE a few times per week. He knows the word 'rest' and will lay down with you. He is being taught 'look at me' (for a treat) and learns quickly. We are also teaching him impulse control (see video). Fortunately, he is extremely treat-motivated so easy to teach him new things. He did well off-leash in a large enclosed area; he just wanted to be by your side. We learned that he knows how to run after thrown tennis balls, but is still in the 'let's destroy this thing' stage likely because of his stress. Give him a tennis ball while you are working and he'll entertain himself by chewing on it.

ASHE was well-behaved recently at a dog fair that had lots of commotion, strangers, kids, and dogs (see videos). He did react badly (i.e., lunged towards) to a black dog that he saw maybe 12 feet away.

Unfortunately, with everything that ASHE has been through and the past 2 months in boarding kennels without much enrichment or training, he continues to show some stress. He has reacted badly towards other dogs (2 black dogs) during his stay at the kennels and we don't yet trust him with kids. He will need an experienced owner/leader to decompress and help him to show his true calm, loving self.

For now, we are looking for a quiet home with one or two adults without kids or a lot of traffic and lots of routine, so that we can help him decompress and learn about all good behaviors.

BACKGROUND: ASHE lived on the streets in CA with a homeless person with alcohol issues for his entire short life. A Good Samaritan/animal rescue volunteer who saw him often came across him in bad shape with his owner intoxicated and passed out. She felt compelled to get ASHE out of the situation and the homeless person relinquished ownership. In early August, ASHE was transported to Boise for an adopter, but they changed their mind and ASHE was placed temporarily in a Boise boarding kennel. He got kennel cough and went downhill quickly, to the point the facility didn't think he was going to make it. Volunteers with Idaho Mastiff Rescue stepped in and took him to an emergency vet. He has made a miraculous recovery and we've got to witness his sweet demeanor.
