Hi! I'm Apple! I am a petite Dane mix weighing in at only 87lbs! I can be shy at first, but once I get to know you I bond very quickly! I love my people and I love nothing more than snuggling up on the couch or in the human bed. I do get the occasional zoomies when I’m outside, but overall I much prefer a life of leisure!
Sometimes men can make me uncomfortable and scared. I need extra time to warm up to them and even then, some fast movements or new attire can spook me. If you remove the scary item - such as a robe or a new hat - or stop the movement that is scaring me, I will slowly readjust and go forward to sniff and inspect. Once I have inspected and realized everything is ok, we are right back to being buddies!
I really love my people which can cause me to be a little lonely when I am by myself. I do best in a crate when left alone, though I do sometimes try to escape my crate as well. It really helps if you give me an enrichment toy like a snoop or a Kong or a good chew to preoccupy me. Probably best to keep the dog beds out of my crate as they have a tendency to explode with fluff in the crate - I don’t know how that happens!
I have been working really hard on housebreaking and am doing very well! I know to whine and let my people know when I have to go. My fosters keep me on a good potty routine which helps tremendously. I would prefer to go out every 4-5 hours please! I would also really prefer my humans work from home or stay at home often as I experienced some previous trauma being left alone for very long periods of time.
I am a very good girl in the car and an excellent road trip companion! I went on a 35 hour round trip road trip with my foster family and handled it like a seasoned pro! I am very brave and adaptable and can handle city life like a native! Those Chicagoans had no idea I was a southern belle who was just visiting with the way I handled busy intersections, the hotel elevator, passing other dogs on leash, and doing my potty business with very limited green spaces! I didn’t bark at other dogs in the elevators or lobbies at all! I blended right into the hustle and bustle of the big city. I walk really nicely on a leash if you use a head halter and martingale collar.
I really like the tiny dogs in my foster home. I am super respectful of their boundaries and if they let me know they don’t want to play, I listen and immediately go off to entertain myself. I also live with two big male Great Dane and have previously lived with a 50 pound female dog. I am very friendly and polite with the cats.
My foster home doesn’t have any kids or know anyone with kids, but I previously lived successfully with an infant. My prior home reported that I was good with kids and my current foster momma thinks this is probably accurate. I do like to sometimes jump for hugs so I suppose I could potentially knock smaller kids over with my affections. I am a very brave and moldable girl and I would love to find the perfect fit for my forever home - I hope that can be you!
