Meet Apollo
Apollo is an adorable nine-month-old terrier mix that weighs approximately 20 lbs. He has long legs, but a narrow build. Apollo is still growing. He is a sweetheart who has survived incredible odds and deserves a wonderful, loving forever home.
Apollo was rescued by our partners in the South from a high kill shelter when he was just four months old . He arrived at the shelter and was slated for euthanasia due to exhibiting signs of life-threatening illness that required immediate and extensive medical attention.
Our rescue partners in the South found a foster home for him and spent months trying to correctly diagnose and treat sweet Apollo. Their efforts paid off. Three months later, Apollo is healthy, has arrived in Maine and is ready for his new home!
Apollo was originally diagnosed with Hepatic Encephalopathy. It is a condition characterized by the inability of the liver to filter toxins. The lack of filtering leads to an accumulation of toxins (particularly ammonia), causing symptoms indicative of central nervous system issues. Symptoms include head pressing, circling, vomiting, frequent urination, and diarrhea.
***Apollo has NOT exhibited any of these symptoms since arriving at our shelter at the beginning of April.***
He was on medication and a prescription low protein diet when he arrived in Maine. He is no longer on medication but continues to be given the prescription low protein diet.
Last week he visited our vet where he received follow up blood work to check his liver levels and was also neutered. His liver levels are currently in the normal range. Our veterinarian’s advice is to keep Apollo on the special diet for now. If he is taken off the food in the future, he should have blood work done one month afterwards to make sure his liver is processing correctly.
Additionally, Apollo is a breed that needs regular grooming. Potential adopters should be prepared for this expense and establish a relationship with a local groomer.
We have no information on Apollo''s outlook on cats, or children. Apollo shared his foster home in the South with two dogs of similar size. Please bring any resident dogs and all family members to the shelter for a meet and greet with Apollo. We always recommend careful introductions to resident felines that includes the ability to separate initially.
Apollo appears to be a very healthy, happy, playful puppy who would be a wonderful addition to the right home. Please consider giving him a loving home! E-mail Charleysstrays@yahoo.com if interested in adopting Apollo.
