Personality

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog breed has a smart and independent mind and youthful energy that can last them their entire lifetime. These athletic dogs love to play and show their families big-time affection. They learn quickly and thrive when given space to explore and engage with new environments. Lowland Sheepdogs are the opposite of loners and prefer co-existing with their people.

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog emerged from Poland hundreds of years ago, likely as far back as 1514 when there was evidence that a Polish sheep trader left three dogs in Scotland in exchange for sheep. They are sometimes called Polski Owczarek Nizinny (PON) dogs. They were originally used as guarding and herding dogs. During World War II, the breed sat on the brink of extinction. Luckily, dedicated breeders prevented such, and started appearing stateside in the late 1900s.

Infused with sprightly energy, the Polish Sheepdog requires owners who value an active lifestyle and would love a buddy to join in various exercises like power walking. Owners should also have some interest in grooming since PONs’s long coats require regular brushing to avoid tangles. A Polish Lowland Sheepdog’s ideal day includes a long hike with an owner who appreciates the great outdoors as much as them.

Lots of physical activity like swimming and running is a must. Their high energy levels extend to the mental arena, so this sheepdog needs games to keep their brains engaged and out of trouble. Lowland Sheepdogs don’t like being bored and appreciate the time and space to wander outside.

Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are capable of adapting to smaller dwellings like apartments but it’s better if they have access to a secure yard so they can roam regularly. It’s important that any fencing is ironclad against their tendency to dig.

The PON sheepdog’s unique coat needs specific care that includes corded coat maintenance, which involves separating and teasing the hairs. Baths should only be when necessary to help retain their skin’s oils and keep their coats healthy and shiny. They are considered hypoallergenic dogs.

Bright and eager, Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are capable of advanced training. However, due to an occasional independent streak, it’s very important to focus on patience, positive reinforcement, and consistency in training these dogs. They also need mind-engaging activities to help avoid boredom.

Polish Lowland Sheepdogs do well with spirited children who can match their high energy, especially ones who are older and who can participate in their exercise and mental stimulation needs. PONs can do well with other animals, with proper early socialization and exposure otherwise herding tendencies can turn into rougher play.

The cost of a Polish Lowland Sheepdog from a breeder is significantly more than the cost of adopting one from a local shelter or rescue. The adoption fee usually covers additional items such as spaying or neutering, vaccines, and microchipping.
