Meet Titan
Ready for a ray of sunshine boost to your day? Read on for the heartwarming story of Titan…
On a cold January night just after the new year, Titan showed up at a PetSmart parking lot, scared, hungry, but hopeful. He was tempted inside with treats by a quick-thinking AVA volunteer, and began his journey of hope with a foster family, learning to be a beloved pet rather than a roving, hungry tomcat.
The first couple of weeks were a drastic change for this chubby-cheeked boy with a kissable black dot on his nose. He spent most of the first few days hiding in the carrier or the covered bed, coming out at night to eat and use the box. With patient, persistent presence, the foster parents acclimated Titan to having people around him while he is eating, and accepted being petted and brushed lightly while he ate. Titan spent the first weeks flinching away from approaching hands, but even at his most stressed state, he did not claw or bite. He did use his paw to indicate the limit of tolerance firmly, but showed no aggression or claws, just a hesitancy that melted away as he became more trusting of the humans who offered him nothing but kindness, food and comfort.
As he got comfortable, Titan’s natural curiosity and playfulness came to the fore. Although he is tentative in his approach to anything new, he does respond positively as perceived unknowns become known pleasures. He graduated from being a timid, hidey cat to one that plays joyfully with toys in a tent and across the floor, scratches on appropriate posts and mats, and a watchful, companionable friend happy to just hang out and be. His foster caregivers deserve all the credits for convincing Titan that people and indoor space are safe, secure, and filled with love and good food.
And yes, food is a great way to Titan’s heart! His outdoor experience instilled long memory of hunger that expresses itself in his food-hoovering, doesn’t-matter-what-brand-or-flavour-or-texture, behaviour that the fosters are amending with lick mats and treat-dispensing toys. Titan welcomes all food and treats, doesn’t matter if it’s his or not, so the foster parents have had to keep a close eye on their own food as Titan eyes it with great interest! Food is definitely the way into Titan’s heart and trust.
Now that Titan has learned to play, all toys, no matter what, are game! He enjoys self play with mice, crinkle balls or hanging toys, and is a great kicker toy aficionado. But he also loves to engage in interactive ribbon wand toy play with people, and show off his prowess as a hunter. He is just a joy to watch as he relaxes in the space and throws himself whole-heartedly into living the good life.
As Titan shows his true self more and more, it is safe to say that this 3.5yo ex-tom is well on his way to becoming a loyal, attentive and devoted member of a household. Although not tested with other cats, dogs or children, Titan’s timid and gentle nature has proven to be adaptable and open to gradual changes. He can be picked up and cuddled now, leans into head kisses with heartwarming eagerness, and accepts nail trim without any adverse reaction. A calm, quiet home and loving humans are likely his dream, and we hope you will continue this uplifting story of a converted tomcat to beloved companion, and forge ahead into a life together, rich with discoveries and joy.
