Meet Tao!
Tao is a young, approximately 1-year-old beautiful seal-point Siamese mix boy who started life as what we thought was a feral cat living on his own. Our rescue responded to a request for help from a homeowner who kept chickens and had her own outside cats, and Tao had been showing up desperately trying to eat their food and hunt their chickens. We set a live trap and after 24 hours, we finally had him with the intent to TNR him and relocate.
At first, Tao was like most ferals. Hissed, growled, showed fear and uncertainty, and would cower on the top level of his cage. But after the first 2-3 days, he already began showing desire for human interaction — which a feral would NOT do. So we began working with him, got him neutered, tested for FIV/FeLV, all the usual.
His transformation has been swift and nothing short of incredible. Within 10 days, he let us touch him for the first time. Within 20 days, he was enjoying head/cheek petting and would show SO much excitement to see us and would put his tail up and stamp his little feet. Within 30 days, he let us pet his back for the first time. At 35. days, he was allowed out into the commons room so we could actually sit with him and so he could socialize with the other cats, and this is where Tao has truly blossomed.
Now after 6-7 months with us, Tao has thoroughly come to LOVE human attention and affection, crave it and seek it actively. When we come into the room, he immediately comes to us and wants pets and love. He rubs all over and desperately wants scritches and rub downs, and is the sweetest boy. He loves getting kissed on the top of his head, being petted head to tail, getting his cheeks scratched, etc. He is VERY snuggly and loving, and loves to be involved in everything we do. He’s very curious and silly. He also enjoys giving kisses back as well as nose rubs, and has become quite the lap cat and has even begun really enjoying being picked up, held and hugged, and mooched to his heart’s content!
Tao does indeed play with toys too, he really enjoys toy mice and ping pong balls. I think he would truly enjoy someone who would play with him with wand toys and laser pointers. His favorite game is pouncing on hands and feet wiggled under blankets and bed covers!
Tao also REALLY needs at least one cat companion — he actually has surprised me with how much he *desperately* loves other cats! Also interestingly enough, Tao is obsessed with being a father or big brother to the kittens we’ve had come through Freddie’s in the past 6 months. He is crazy about babies and snuggles them, washes them, plays with them, etc. immediately upon meeting them for the first time. It is so sweet!
Another gentle, laid back male cat would be most ideal. Females tend to be a bit more bossy and may bully him, but I am open to the possibility. We do have several kittens available, as well as a very sweet, VERY petite, non-bossy female who is Tao’s same age and whom he really enjoys, who could be adopted as a companion with Tao.
Young children would be too much for Tao, but older children 8+ may be fine if the household is a calm, laid back one and they can be patient with him as he settles. Tao would be overwhelmed in a busy, active household. I think dogs are also too much for Tao, although I may consider a home with one senior small dog.
So after all the amazing facts about Tao, you’re likely asking what makes him a “Special Needs” cat? Unfortunately like many other male cats, Tao is prone to urinary crystals and urethral blockages (this is deadly if uncaught). He has already become blocked once when he first came in, which required emergency care at our hospital, and we caught a second flare right before he became blocked (thankfully) and were able to manage it with steroids and antibiotics. Tao will need to stay on a strict prescription canned/wet diet food for the rest of his life in order to prevent this from reoccurring, and will need an attentive owner who can keep an eye on his litterbox usage and any signs of potential issues. If kept on his Rx diet, the risk of any future issues is very, very small. And any companion kitty can safely eat this same food as well, so no risk of him sneaking non-Rx food. Luckily it is approximately the same cost as good quality non-Rx cat food, and he really eats well on it, so it is not much of a financial burden. This is an easy condition to manage and has no long term effects or risks to lifespan as long as he is kept on his required food and kept healthy! He is literally the perfect cat and SO WORTH IT!
As always, all available cats and kittens are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and tested for FIV/FeLV. Cats 5 years and over have full dentals completed.
Our kitties come with lifetime behavioral support, and a no-questions-asked return policy.
All adoptions require an approved application, and home visit upon approval when your new family member is delivered. As such, our adoptions are generally limited to a 2-3 hour drive radius of the Chattanooga area. HOWEVER, for Tao, we may expand this for the perfect home and conduct our home visit via Zoom/Google Meet with approved application and confirmation of home ownership/lease.
If you are interested in adopting Tao, please download our adoption application from our website: http://www.FreddiesFelines.org and return via e-mail to FreddiesFelines@gmail.com .
I apologize, but due to the overwhelming number of inquiries we get, we cannot answer phone calls about our kitties. Our rescue is small and it’s just me running the show! Please fill out and e-mail the application.
Adoption Fee: $80
