Meet Simon and Schuster
SIMON AND SCHUSTER
Approximate DOB: 8/8/23. Simon and Schuster are siblings who were born with eye infections that took both eyes. They had surgery and were neutered on 11/21/23
Simon and Schuster are incredibly SWEET, GENTLE and LOVING. They also have their typical crazy young kitty time where they love to play with toys and each other. They are navigating well around their foster home, and both are even doing well with going up and down a few stairs. It’s amazing how they behave like regular cats with full vision and do not let their impairments limit them in any way. in fact, both behave like typical youngsters -- very much enjoying their food, toys and playtime. They have long, soft fur of orange and white. Simon has a white nose, Schuster has the orange one. They are going to be big beautiful adults who will provide you years of entertainment and love.
Simon and Schuster have been raised other cats and dogs and are very comfortable navigating their way around them. They know boundaries with some of the cats. They are litter box trained and no matter where they are, will scamper back to the litter box. They are still kenneled at night and when foster goes out. They eat dry cat chow and love the twice daily wet food. I believe their best home would be either just the two of them or a cat friendly dog. They do love each other and Schuster will call out to Simon if he can’t find him. But, both are very independent having free range in the house. They quickly got the layout of my house and play with the other foster kittens.
Here is helpful information -- provided by Bests Friends Animal Society -- on life with blind cats, which once getting them situated can be quite normal.
Blindness doesn’t have to significantly affect a cat’s quality of life. If you provide a safe, stimulating environment, a blind cat can continue to enjoy and remain engaged in life and the world around him or her.
How do blind cats navigate in their environment?
Blind cats rely on touch, scent, sound and memory to find their way around. To judge proximity to objects, they use their whiskers a lot more than sighted cats.
Some blind cats appear to listen for sound echoes to help them navigate, and some also walk with their tail tip touching the ground as an additional sense organ. Blind cats may climb onto things, rather than jumping, but many also memorize heights and distances. Because they rely on memory to navigate, furniture should not be rearranged, and obstructions should not be left on the floor when there is a blind cat in the house.
How do I play with my blind cat?
Toys that make sounds, give off scents or contain treats are enjoyable to a blind cat. Be creative. Noisy toys such as balls with bells in them or something as simple as a scrunched-up paper bag will provide stimulation. Many blind cats learn how to dribble paper balls or jingly toys across a room.
