Meet Katydid
Katydids are part of the same family of insects as crickets and grasshoppers and this Katydid moves in a similar way. She has a congenital disorder called Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH) which causes issues with balance and coordination.
Katydid is mildly affected so she gets around pretty well, but has bit more hop and bounce to her run. Because of her condition, Katydid doesn't currently jump and only climbs a little bit. She is likely to learn to climb and would benefit from ramps or stairs to get up onto furniture.
Katydid loves to play and has lots and lots of energy; her wobbles don't slow her down at all! Some of her favorite toys are plastic springs that she can bat around and chase, plush toys to carry in her mouth, larger toys to bunny kick, the tower of tracks is lots of fun too and of course she loves wand toys! Basically, Katydid loves all kinds of toys and lots of them!
She will need to go to a home with another Pet Haven kitten, or to a home with an active young resident cat to play with her. This lovely lady loves attention and has a good loud purr motor! When she gets tired from all her play time, she loves to curl up on a cozy bed or lap and snuggle with people or feline friends.
Katydid is in a quiet home currently but also goes to work with her foster mom and gets lots of exposure to other people, noises and even has met a couple of dogs that come to the office. She's a bit reserved with new people, animals, and surroundings at first but warms up very quickly once she feels safe.
Katydid's ideal home would be willing to make a few special accommodations to keep this beautiful girl safe and help her out with accessibility. This means things like easy litter box access (litter boxes spread throughout the home and on each floor; low-entry litter boxes are the best option), raised food bowls, blocked-off open banisters and stair railings for her safety, and carpeting on all stairs (hardwood stairs can be dangerous for wobbly cats). She would also benefit from rugs around furniture to pad any potential falls.
Although Katydid is a special needs kitten, once her home accommodations are met, her daily care is much the same as any other young kitten. Katydid's foster mom has three wobbly cats of her own and can provide you with plenty of tips for daily life with CH cats.
A few facts about Cerebellar Hypoplasia:
* Cerebellar hypoplasia (CH) is a disorder in which the cerebellum part of the brain doesn't develop completely before birth. The cerebellum is responsible for motor control and coordination, so having an underdeveloped cerebellum results in jerky movements, clumsiness, and even tremors. They are also known as wobbly cats.
* CH is a congenital condition, meaning affected animals are born with it. They don't know any different, nor are they in any pain.
* Though there is no treatment or cure for CH, a cat can learn to compensate for the condition and therefore seemingly improve, especially over the first year.
* Many CH cats can't jump, so they instead develop excellent climbing skills. Encouraging play can also help to build up muscle strength in their legs, which in turn helps their mobility.
* CH does not get worse over time, and it doesn't cause any pain.
* CH does not affect lifespan. It also does not cause any other complications. That said, because of CH cats' wobbly nature and tendency to fall, they may hurt themselves and require extra veterinary care to treat injuries. Chipped or broken teeth are not uncommon. This can be avoided with a few thoughtful accommodations.
Cats with CH don't let their disability get in the way of enjoying life. Katydid is an extremely happy and playful kitten!
