Meet Julian (special case)
For his first several weeks with us, Julian was unapproachable. He would lunge, spit, swat and try to bite. Absolutely beside himself.
Not our first rodeo, we did what we do with cats like this - take care of them from a safe distance. Speak gently. Show consistency. Meet his needs with zero expectation of reciprocation...
Julian has come so far. He has progressed from being unapproachable to letting us pet him. He has progressed from needing to be in a crate to being able to free-roam among others for bits at a time. It has been wonderful to see him trust us more!
We have avoided marketing him for adoption because we've been waiting for his terrible fear to disappear, and then in a lightbulb moment it dawned on us! His fear is not going to disappear while he is with us.
It can't.
He is not where he wants to be and, frustrating as it is to not be able to fully succeed with a cat, he is not where he needs to be. Julian needs to be HOME.
Due to his fear and reactivity, Julian's ideal home will be with an independent human adult who would love a companion in the home, someone to talk to and hang with who might take a long time to be OK with giving and receiving affection. Julian's ideal human will be someone who wants to provide a safe space for an animal who has run out of options and DESPERATELY needs to feel safe.
Is Julian safe with us? YES. But he doesn't feel it, and he won't because we have 40 other cats and he feels overwhelmed.
We think he would prefer to be a solo cat, but he might be able to share his space with one or two other aloof cats who will leave him be. We have met cats like him before who begin to thrive the moment they leave our adoption center and feel and smell the comforts of HOME.
So, here we are. We are officially putting it out to the universe. There is a little guy named Julian who needs a break. Please share this post so Julian's special human can be found!
(3yo, strikingly handsome and available in Huntington Station NY)
