Mitzy's story is a sad one. Mitzy initially came to us in 2023. She was found as a stray and ended up with animal services. When found she was in deplorable condition and was taken by animal services immediately to the vet. Due to her age and health plus she needed an extensive dental surgery it was deemed she was not adoptable and was going to be euthanized. Luckily for Mitzy one of the kind staff saw Mitzy's loveliness and asked if she could take her on. This is when we became involved. We helped through the rescue to find Mitzy's what we thought was her forever home. Mitzy was medically cleared for adoption; she had received a full dental, vaccinations were updated, bloodwork was good, she was microchipped.
In July we received a phone call. It was from an animal shelter near Ottawa which is 5 hours away from us letting us know they had a cat that belonged to the rescue. We were a bit taken back as we didn't adopt one of our cats in the area. When asked to describe the cat we realized it was Mitzy, we were shocked. Mitzy's former adopter apparently waited until there was no one in the reception area of the shelter and ran in and dumped her in her carrier along with a few of her belongings. Mitzy was in bad shape. She had lost a significant amount of weight, and something was wrong with her eye, the shelter manager said they noticed she was urinating quite frequently. We were so thankful to the shelter for reaching out to us to let us know they had Mitzy. That is why we microchip all of our rescues. We were heartbroken about what happened to Mitzy and couldn't understand why this happened. We screen our adopters thoroughly and we always let our adopters know if for whatever reason you cannot keep your pet please reach out to us as we will take our cats and dogs back.
We arranged transport through a wonderful organization that transports animals in need. Mitzy was transported to our vet clinic. A full examination was done with bloodwork, fecal, etc. The eye was an untreated ulcer which now has left Mitzy blind in that eye. Bloodwork revealed she was diabetic. No wonder she was in such terrible shape with untreated diabetes. Mitzy has been with our vet clinic since then and her glucose level is finally stabilized. Her eye looks better as it was treated with medicated eye drops and natural tears. She will never have vision in that eye but it does not cause her any pain now that it has been treated.
She was also a matted mess, she had matts that were so tight to her skin. She has been fully groomed with a bath and shave down. She was an angel while being groomed.
The best news from all of this is that we have found Mitzy a wonderful forever foster which she will be going to shortly. The foster has had experience with diabetic cats which is fantastic. We are so thankful to Jessica for taking Mitzy under her angel wings.
The rescue will take care of all of Mitzy's medical needs, medication and food needs for the remainder of her life.
We are just so thankful we got her back. Even though it was heartbreaking to have this happen to one of our rescues we are grateful that her former adopter brought her to a shelter. We are grateful for microchips as that is what heped reunite Mitzy back to us.
