Meet Nui
Nui is a Mitred conure, sometimes known as cherry-headed conures. This species was made famous by the book and movie about the Parrots of Telegraph Hill.
Nui came to us from a shelter in NC, because someone had just left him in their yard. Shelters are not the easiest places for birds, so we're glad we could help fairly quickly. Nui has his wellness vet visit and is doing great.
Nui is learning to eat healthy food (whole foods, Nutri-berries, Lafeber's Gourmet Pellets mixed with Harrison's Adult Lifetime Coarsepellets) instead of the yucky seed that was in his cage. He also gets a mix of quinoa and various veggies and blueberries, a mash of Kamut with a touch of wild rice. In the mornings he gets chopped up veggies mixed in the chop and mash. And in the evenings he gets fruit mixed in the mash. He has a good appetite. His favorite treat is pistachios, great for training.
He grows more comfortable and expressive day by day. While still leery of humans in his personal space, he is super food motivated which is great for training. Nui is sweet overall if you'll respect his comfort zones, and just wants to hang out outside the cage and play with toys.
Nui likes bathing in his water bowl. He loves loves loves to shred toys... and he's very efficient at it. He likes having enough toys in his cage that he can hide behind. So there is a corner of his cage where he can hide behind two large toys and a wreath perch - this makes him the most comfortable.
He's not a good flyer... yet - but he has improved. He no longer crash lands and he's able to bank and turn.
Before we can discuss a specific bird with you, we ask that you follow our adoption process. Some birds are in foster homes that may adopt them, many other birds are waiting for our help and are not yet posted in PetFinders. The adoption coordinator in your area will work with you to find the best home for each bird, and a species and personality that works best for your family too. We want to set everyone up for success, especially our parrots.
To get started, the adoption process includes completing our parrot match application and attending one of our core classes. You can find information about this process on our website at www.phoenixlanding.org/adopt.
ONLY AREAS OF OPERATION: Phoenix Landing serves only Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, and northeast Florida. We do not ship birds. However, everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us for our online events. Parrots are unique and they deserve us to be informed caretakers. There are also many past event recordings available which you may find helpful. All event information can be found at www.phoenixlanding.org/events
