Meet Bud

Hello to all of you! Let me introduce myself and also tell you a little bit about me and my arrival into Florida Parrot Rescue.

My name is Bud - short and to the point!!! I am a 15 year old quaker parrot. We can live to be 30 years or older with the right care and attention. Just like you humans, the better we are taken care of the longer our life span.

The reason I am in Rescue is that my one and only previous owner had to go into a nursing home. I sure do miss my owner, but I am so looking forward to finding a new forever home.

One thing you do need to know right away is that I am a typical quaker parrot. You may ask "what is a typical quaker parrot?" We quakers are normally very cage aggressive. We are very protective of our homes. If you do a bit of research, you will find that Quakers are the only parrot/parakeet that build nests rather than use hollow trees. In the wild, we build huge, elaborate, community nests that lots of the flock live in. Then each of us build a little "bedroom", so to speak, within the community nest, that each couple and very close family members sleep in. Obviously we don't want strangers in our bedroom! So this means that you must be very patient with me until I get to know and trust you. When I do finally feel comfortable with you, and understand that you are part of my close family I will "step up" from my cage. Showing me that you are loving, patient and letting me go at my own pace goes a long way in earning my trust. It'll be worth it though, I promise!

I love playing with all of my toys. So far my new foster Mom has not been able to figure out which one I like best. If you adopt me, just please make sure you keep plenty of toys available for me so that I stay entertained. A little secret I will share with you, is that if you keep switching my toys weekly, that keeps me busy. When I finally show you which toy I like best, you can then keep that in my cage all of the time. Do we have a deal??

Oh and another thing I really, really like is those head scratches! They are awesome. I will "purr" for you when you scratch my head!!

Now, another thing I need to share with you is that I would not be good in a home with children!! NO NO NO!! I'd be okay in a home with other birds, but not those children.

I can be a biter, again just letting you know about me and my habits. I have a beak and it is sharp. One thing you can do to help me be the good, non biter that I know I can be is to just observe me and watch my body language. I will usually give you a warning when I'm about to bite. When you see that warning, just back off, let me have my space, and eventually I won't feel the need to actually bite, a warning will be good enough. Once I get to feel safe and secure with you as my new companion, I may not bite you at all. I really just want to be a "lover", but I need the right person. If you think you have the patience, time, love and understanding then please fill out an application.

If you have read my story, you now know that I am hoping to find my "FOREVER HOME". Although I would be happy in any forever home, I really need a home with an experienced bird person, even better, an experienced Quaker person!

Below is the link to my Amazon wish list. Please take some time and look at my list and hopefully you will find some things that you would like to send to me to keep me busy and happy. Hope to hear from some of you!! Thanks for stopping by!
