Meet Annie
The best way to learn more about our birds and pursue possible adoption is to complete our parrot match application, found under the "Adoption" tab on our website, www.phoenixlanding.org. The nice volunteer who monitors PetFinders inquiries cannot tell you about specific individuals.
Annie is a 7 year old female (DNA pending) sun conure who was relinquished when her person had to go into assisted living. According to her new foster family, she seems to enjoy the company of people. She can be loud at times (that's a sun conure!), but will quiet down if you whisper the word “whisper” to her. She has really taken to target training for little bits of walnuts and almonds. She is eager to touch the chopstick and will gently take the treat from my fingers. She seems like she would be great at learning tricks since she is so good with target training.
Annie has been a shoulder bird, and that can be hard to change once it is a pattern. She loves coming out to the top of her cage if you open the door, and she is happy to hang out there. The outside of a cage is "valuable real estate" so we can add perches and toys just like we do on the inside of cages.
Annie seems to have a genuine curiosity about people, because she will go to the side of the cage you stand next to, a positive sign. She might do best in a home where she gets a lot of attention from people, hopefully with someone who is home most of the day. At a minimum, she shouldn't be left long hours in a cage without other people or birds to keep her company. In her previous home, her cage was set up in the living room so she could be part of the action.
Annie needs a larger cage, and our minimum recommended size for a conure is 32" wide. Bird move horizontally, so we encourage you to look for wide cages, not high ones. If we do not have a donated cage when she finds a prospective home, a cage will need to be purchased.
Our process: After you complete our online core class (recommended for anyone!) you will be connected with the adoption coordinator for your area. Attending one of our core parrot care classes is also required in order to adopt a parrot. A list of them may be found at https://www.phoenixlanding.org/events.html. Those classes that count as part of the adoption process are noted with an icon beside their title.
Phoenix Landing offers educational classes and facilitates parrot adoptions in Maryland, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, and northern Florida. Phoenix Landing does not ship birds.
