Cal has a very sad story, and is a survivor of years of cruelty and neglect. He was the "pet" of a couple in TN who kept him outside, tied to a tree, every single day for years. They moved and left Cal behind, and when his companion, a Brittany Spaniel, died of heatstroke, he was given by the couple's son to a "friend" who didn't want him and his life of neglect continued- tied outside 24/7/365. When the "friend" decided to get rid of Cal he set him free- and when Cal returned, he threatened to shoot him. Two kind women heard of his plight and brought him to a vet's office, and contacted numerous rescues to see if they would help him. We said YES immediately!
The vet found that Cal had large, painful abcesses in his mouth and pulled all but two of his teeth. His filthy, matted fur was shaved and a severe ear infection was treated. He was started on the road to recovery, and is now in foster care, awaiting a loving home.
And Cal reminds me of WHY we rescue! He is such a sweet, gentle, loving dog and seems grateful for any kindness shown to him. He is severely emaciated due to starvation, but eats like a champ and is gaining weight. He is also cratetrained.  He gets along just great with my dogs and takes his cues from them- he didn't know how to go up or down a flight of stairs when he came, but learned quickly by watching my dogs- and with the help of treats. And he's so quiet- I haven't heard him make a sound, other than a contented little moan when he's getting affection or a weird groaning sound when he's playing with a ball. And he LOVES playing with balls! He ignores bones or stuffed toys, but will chase a ball like a happy puppy till he's tuckered out- I love seeing that side to him. It reminds me so much of how much he's been deprived of in his life and it  makes me so happy he was saved.
I always try to warn of any bad habits that a prospective adopter would need to know but to be honest I can't think of any- he's a bit of a beggar, a habit I think he picked up at my house- but isn't all that intrusive. And I suspect his hearing isn't perfect, although he's certainly not deaf. His tongue sticks out of the right side of his mouth because he has so few teeth but he eats anything and everything he can with great gusto! And he may have some arthritis in his back legs- he seems a little rickety, especially when he runs.
It is hard for me to imagine how anyone could have mistreated this darling little boy. He is SPECIAL! So loving, with such a gentle spirit. I love him dearly- and am hoping that a compassionate person with a heart of gold will give him a soft, comfortable bed in a loving home where he will forever be warm, safe, loved and wanted.
