Meet Buttercup
I'm not certain of her breed, maybe husky and lab mix?
At her last vet appointment for his 2nd round of vaccines (Oct 22), she weighed in at 7.2 kg / 16 pounds. She will presumably land in the 50 - 60 pound adult weight range.
Buttercup has her spay scheduled for January 28th, 2025 in Stouffville. I will be on site that day, but her adopter will need to be sure they can drop her to this appointment for 7:30 am and pick her back up again at 3:00 pm. This spay appointment is at the cost of Mattie's Place. This is a non-negotiable clause in the adoption contract.
Buttercup will benefit from having another dog in the home that has good manners to help her navigate life. She's also a rambunctious puppy, so working with a professional trainer is highly important so she grows into an amazing adult canine citizen.
Buttercup is a confident puppy so she'll need an adopter with dog experience, preferably husky experience and has an active lifestyle.
Buttercup is a really fun and spunky puppy with a big fun personality, that is looking for an equally fun adopter to enjoy many life adventures with!
FROM THE FOSTER:
Buttercup is a sweet, active, and curious little girl bursting with personality and love. Have you ever seen a dog that looks like a Labrador but talks like a Husky? That’s Buttercup!
From the minute she arrived, she was a little hesitant but eager to explore everything around her and get to know me. This curiosity and openness define her — she’s always friendly and excited about meeting new dogs, people, places, and foods.
Speaking of energy — she has tons of it! Buttercup loves walking, exploring, chasing her ball, zooming around, and jumping every which way. A 30-minute walk followed by climbing five flights of stairs? She’ll take it all in stride and still have energy to spare!
Buttercup is a sharp cookie. She’s already figured out which door is ours in the apartment complex and knows all the entrances, stairs, and pathways, plus which one we use for specific walks. She can also tell when you’re talking about her — even without hearing her name! It’s fascinating to see what she’ll learn next.
She’s universally adored by everyone she meets and is incredibly affectionate in return. However, her enthusiasm can be a bit too much for people around, and we’re working on staying calm in public and not jumping up to greet every stranger.
After a nap, she loves curling up on your lap, pretending to be a tiny lap dog while you scratch her belly. She greets you with an adorable little dance even if you’ve only been gone for two minutes. Though she wasn’t a fan of hugs or kisses at first, she’s grown to love them. What an affectionate sweetheart!
Buttercup isn’t a velcro dog (yet), but she loves attention and will sometimes “misbehave” — like stealing a slipper or jumping on the couch — just to get a reaction.
As soon as she’s caught, she’ll stop and sit by you, waiting for a cuddle.
She’s also very vocal and loves “talking” to you. Whether she’s letting you know what she wants or responding to your words, she has the heart (and voice!) of a Husky. Occasionally, she’ll make an impressively dramatic, human-like cry that’s both shocking and endearing.
One of the cutest things about her is her “helicopter” tail. When she’s happy, it spins in full 360° circles instead of wagging side to side. It’s the most joyful thing to watch!
Training & Behaviour
Buttercup is a very smart puppy! She already knows several cues, including sit, wait, go (release), paw, crate, place (her spot outside the crate), no nip (to stop her puppy mouthing), no/stop, trade-off (for swapping found items for treats), focus, and follow (walking by your side).
She eats in her crate and patiently waits for the “go” command before starting. She’s even learned to high-five! Buttercup’s intelligence and eagerness to learn make her a joy to train — there’s nothing she can’t learn with time and consistency.
House Training
Buttercup has proudly mastered her housetraining! She uses a bell to signal when it’s time for a potty break, and it’s been quite a while since her last accident. Her final potty break is usually around 9–10 p.m., and she comfortably sleeps through the night until 6–7 a.m.
Crate Training
She has made great progress with her crate training since day one. Buttercup settles in easily for nighttime sleep and scheduled daytime naps. While she may cry a little if she expects playtime after waking up, she quickly settles down.
Favourite Things
Buttercup LOVES her humans, her toys (especially squeaky and puzzle toys), playing tug-of-war and fetch, long walks, and collecting the biggest stick she can find to show off to other dogs. She enjoys birdwatching from the window, snacking on apples, “talking” like a human, and sneaking off with kitchen towels for a game of chase.
